During his visit to London, the Governor of the East-Kazakhstan Region, Danial Akhmetov, visited the Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility plant, where he learned about the activities of the plant for the sorting and processing of solid waste. Governor Akhmetov also met with the management of Transport for London, the capital's public transport operator, regarding the organisation of public transportation.
On March 6th, Governor Akhmetov held a meeting with EBRD Vice President for Banking Alain Pilloux, during which they discussed further prospects for cooperation on the joint implementation of investment projects, aimed at infrastructure development of the region.
During the meeting, Governor Akhmetov and EBRD President Sir Suma Chakrabarti signed an Agreement on the financing of the investment project "Modernisation of street lighting systems in cities and regional centers of the East Kazakhstan Region", totaling 5.6 billion tenge. The agreement provides for the replacement of more than 32 thousand bulbs for energy-saving equipment in 6 cities and 11 regional centers. The changes will benefit a population of more than 630 thousand people.
This project is the 2nd phase of the introduction of energy-saving technologies in street lighting systems in East Kazakhstan. There are already agreements between the EBRD and the Administration of the East Kazakhstan Region on the introduction of a smart lighting system. These agreements will see the replacement of more than 25 thousand bulbs with energy-saving technology in the cities of Oskemen and Semey, at a cost of 4.8 billion tenge. Construction will begin with mounting works in May of this year.
During the discussions, the Mayor and the President of the EBRD also agreed to consider the possibility of developing technical documentation and financing a project for modern waste management and recycling in Ust-Kamenogorsk, amounting to 29.5 billion tenge. At Governor Akhmetov's suggestion, the EBRD will start examining a project on gasification of 50 rural settlements in the Zaysan, Urzhar and Tarbagatay districts, costing 33.3 billion tenge.
Including the recently signed agreement, 10 credit agreements and agreements with investment volumes totaling 46.1 billion tenge have been concluded between the Regional Administration and the EBRD since 2015.
The current agreement and the signing of the relevant documents on the financing of projects on gasification and processing of solid domestic waste, will see an increase in the volume of investments in East Kazakhstan Region to 108.9 billion tenge (for 12 projects) by the end of 2018.
