President Nursultan Nazarbayev today issued a decree appointing the Chairman and judges to the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) Court.
Lord Harry Kenneth Woolf, who was appointed Chairman, and the judges to the AIFC Court took the oath.
Lord Woolf is one of the most influential and iconic figures in the UK's legal sector. He was the first Lord Supreme Court Judge in England and Wales; the first President of the Court of the Qatar International Financial Center; a former judge of the Court of Appeal of the Hong Kong Court; and a former Chairman of the Legal Committee of the Bank of England Financial Market.
The independent court of the AIFC will commence proceedings in January 2018. The court will consider commercial and civil disputes based on the principles of English legal proceedings. English is also the official language of the AIFC.
In line with Kazakhstan's Constitutional Law on the AIFC, the Court has exclusive jurisdiction to review disputes between the AIFC participants, as well as disputes relating to transactions carried out in AIFC.
