Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Russian Federation were established on October 21, 1992.
The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Russian Federation and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Kazakhstan were opened in 1992.
Imangali TASMAGAMBETOV is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Russian Federation from February 3, 2017.
Aleksey BORODAVKIN is the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Kazakhstan from April 11, 2018.
Kazakh-Russian relations dynamically develop in different spheres.
At the present stage Kazakhstan-Russia strategic partnership is based on the Treaty on Good Neighborliness and Alliance in the 21st century (2013).
Regular meetings and negotiations between the Heads of the States play a crucial role in the strengthening of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and Russia.
8-10 May 2016 – working visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev to Moscow, during which the Head of State participated in the commemorative events associated with the 71st anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.
31 May 2016 – a meeting at the highest level in the framework of the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana.
17 June 2016 – visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. NAZARBAYEV to take part in the 20th St. Petersburg international economic forum.
23-24 June 2016 – visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. NAZARBAYEV to Tashkent to participate in the events in the framework of the summit of the SCO Council of Heads of State.
16 August 2016 –the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. NAZARBAYEV arrived at Sochi. Heads of State discussed important issues of bilateral cooperation, integration interaction development and the key topics of the regional agenda.
4-5 September 2016 – the Heads of State met on the margins of G20 Summit in Hangzhou.
16 September 2016 – the Presidents met in the framework of the meeting of CIS Council of Heads of State in Bishkek.
4 October 2016 – negotiations between the Heads of Kazakhstan and Russia took place in the framework of the Forum of interregional cooperation in Astana.
26 December 2016 – working visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. NAZARBAYEV to St. Petersburg. The Head of State participated in the meetings of the CSTO Collective Security Council and Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
There is Intergovernmental Commission on cooperation between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Russian Federation (the 18th meeting was held in Moscow on February 11, 2016) that consists of 7 subcommissions in the spheres of: interbank and investment collaboration; transport; interregional and border; military and technical; fuel and energy sector; science and new technologies; industry. Moreover, the Intergovernmental Commission on Baikonur complex has been working since 2013 to regulate relations in the area of space activities.
Interparliamentary relations are gradually developing. The system character of interparliamentary partnership is based on the work of relevant parliamentary commissions and committees.
Interregional and cross-border collaboration promotes the successful development of bilateral relations. Forums of interregional cooperation with the participation of the Heads of the States are held annually.
The Programme on Long-term Economic Cooperation between the Governments of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Russian Federation till 2020, the 2012-2017 Programme on interregional and border cooperation between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Russian Federation, the 2016-2018 Kazakhstan-Russia joint action plan are being realized.
Russia is traditionally the biggest trade partner of Kazakhstan.
The trade turnover between Russia and Kazakhstan at the end of 2015 was $ 14.6 billion, including export – $ 4.3 billion (“negative" 32.0%) and import – $ 10.2 billion (“negative" 25.9%). Balance of trade - $ 5.9 billion (“negative" 20.6%).
The trade turnover between the countries at the end of January-September 2016 was $ 8,7 billion and in comparison with the same period in 2015 it has decreased by 25,0%. Export was $ 2.5 billion (“negative" 30.0%) and import – $ 6.2 billion (“negative" 22.8%). Balance of trade - $ 3.7 billion.
