Kazakhstan elected as the Chairman of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference

October 16, 2019 - the Republic of Kazakhstan, represented by the Minister of Trade and Integration Bakhyt Sultanov, was unanimously elected by the General Council of the World Trade Organization as the Chair of the 12th Ministerial Conference of the WTO, which will be held on June 8-11, 2020 in Nur Sultan.

On behalf of the Government of Kazakhstan, Permanent Representative Zhanar Aitzhanova thanked the WTO member states for the confidence placed in the country to hold such an important event, and also assured that Kazakhstan intends to make all necessary efforts to ensure substantive outcomes of the upcoming Conference.

The representative of Kazakhstan also noted that today the multilateral trading system is facing unprecedented challenges in the form of protectionism and unilateral trade measures, and in this regard, called on WTO member states to begin a dialogue on collective development of solutions that will make the WTO an organization that is responsive to the needs and challenges of the modern world.

In addition, the Permanent Representative Aitzhanova stated that recently acceded WTO members are genuine supporters of the multilateral trading system due to the depth and scope of their commitments both in terms of access to markets for goods and services, and in relation to rules and disciplines based on WTO agreements. In this regard, the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan expressed hope that the founding members of the WTO will follow the example of the young members of the Organization in order to ensure a level-playing field.
